Beatrice’s Terrace Opens in Atlantic City July 25; L.A. and Vegas May Be Next

It’s no secret that Beatrice Inn, Employees Only, and Smith and Mills owner Matt Abramcyk is poised to open a lounge on the fifth floor of the Chelsea in Atlantic City (we’ve just heard it will be called the Terrace and will officially open the weekend of July 25, after the hotel’s opening party a week prior — and there are sure to be friends-and-family festivities before then), but according to a long overdue profile in the Observer, that’s not the only thing he’s working on.

Mika Porro of Cafe Cluny Directs Traffic for Brunch Bunches

"I work every Saturday and Sunday for brunch, and there will be groups of girlfriends all the time."Photo: Melissa Hom

Mika Porro was a waitress at Café Luxemburg before she moved away from the city. About four months ago, she got a gig as a manager at Lynn Wagenknecht’s other joint, Cafe Cluny. Whether you know Cluny as the spot where you pick up your morning croissant and dose of the Times, or as a lovely backup when you can’t walk into dinner at Morandi (Porro tells us she thinks she’s seen Wagenknecht’s ex Keith McNally there, though she’s never met him), or as the place whose outside benches you stew on when you can’t get into Beatrice across the way, you’ll want to know a bit more — so we asked.

If You Can't Dance at Beatrice, Then Where?

country

Down by the Hipster today points out that Beatrice, long known to downtown denizens as “the one place where you can smoke and dance!,” has put up signs asking patrons to kindly refrain from doing either. So where can you dance? Until now a list of Manhattan’s cabaret licenses hasn’t been available online, but we’ve acquired one from the Department of Consumer Affairs so you can do the all-the-rage tektonik without the cops busting your wildly jiggling ass.

The Old and New Schools Celebrate Atlantic City Projects

Earlier today, we saw what Eric and Donald Trump Jr. eat at their endless ribbon cuttings. So how about Ivanka? Tonight her meal will be prepared by the chefs of Il Mulino, if an invite we’ve received is any indicator. Reporters are being limoed out to the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City to celebrate the fall opening of Il Mulino New York (a white-tablecloth approximation of the original, complete with tuxedoed waiters) and Trattoria Il Mulino, the casual counterpart with an open kitchen.

Minetta Tavern Will Close for McNally Makeover May 6

minetta tavern

The more things change…Photo: Mike Rogers

If you’re the nostalgic type, rather than the "can’t wait to see what Keith does with it" type (perhaps you’d rather remember the Waverly or the Beatrice the way they were), you might want to get to onetime speakeasy Minetta Tavern before its last night under the current ownership — May 6. As we’ve reported, the restaurant will soon be McNallied, with Baltha-czars Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr Frenchifying the menu. A bartender assured a friend of Grub who dined there last night that the fixtures and memorabilia would remain in place. The bartender wasn’t sure whether she, too, would be allowed to stay.

Vote for the Hottest Cook and the Hottest Crowd

bobby flay and gordon ramsay

We'll take Bobby, every time.Photo: Patrick McMullan

In a move somewhat reminiscent of the Daily News poll that prompted Johnny Iuzzini to plead for votes, Nerve has launched “Who Would You Rather: Celebrity Chef Edition.” The pickings are slim — and we don’t mean slim in the svelte, sexy way. We mean: Gordon Ramsay vs. Bobby Flay. Flay contributed a recipe to the author’s cookbook, which explains that. But Gordo? We’re more interested in Down by the Hipster's poll asking which local watering spot pulls the most attractive women. At the time of this post, Rose Bar is inching in front of GoldBar and Beatrice. Strangely, Lucky Cheng’s isn’t even on the list…

Beatrice Inn Provides Valuable Sociology Lesson

beatrice inn

The University of Sevigny.Photo: Yun Cee Ng

At some point in your undergrad days, you were probably introduced to the twin concepts of gemeinschaft (community) and gesellschaft (society). If you weren’t, you may have been introduced to it while standing in line at the Beatrice Inn. Such is the melancholy realization of blogger Jeremiah Moss at Vanishing New York. As articulated by sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies, the tragedy of the modern world was the dissolution of communities into an ocean of self-interested particles living together in a heartless and abstract society. And could there be a better vision of this than citizens of Astoria and Secaucus jostling in line, attempting to gain entry to the Beatrice? As he ponders the atomization of the bar crowd, Moss uses the word “Vongerichtenization,” crediting it to Hunter College professor Frank Kirkland. The phrase refers to Jean George Vongerichten’s restaurants, which, regardless of their neighborhoods, cater to oligarchs. Kirkland, Moss notes approvingly, says that "a neighborhood that is 'Vongerichtified' would be one whose restaurants have shifted their cuisine, their ambiance, and their prices in this high-end direction." Soon it's all about the few and not the many...and you know the rest. Who needs college when we have doormen?

We’ve heard rumors that the team behind Beatrice Inn is doing something in the basement space of the Puck Building, and now Matt Abramcyk reveals that he and Paul Sevigny are trying to open a quasi–social club there. (This will go nicely with a new lobby.) Negotiations continue and nothing has been inked, but Abramcyk is eager to create what he says would be “one of the most special, beautiful spaces in the world.”

Beatrice Owners to Open New Club in … Jersey?

Paul Sevigny: an upgrade from Jerry Blavat, anyway.Photo: Getty Images

At one point Smith and Mills owner Matt Abramcyk was toying with the idea of opening a Skee-Ball bar in the financial district, but now it looks like he has a bigger project on the horizon — in Atlantic City! The Times reports that he and his Beatrice Inn partner, Paul “brother of the actress Chloë” Sevigny, are teaming with Curtis Bashaw, a developer of the Mondrian in Soho, to turn a former Atlantic City Howard Johnson into the Chelsea, a boutique hotel with a Stephen Starr restaurant. A spokesman for the project tells the Times that the Beatrice team is “going to be in charge of celebrity wrangling, including bringing Paul’s sister’s friends down” to a fifth-floor lounge. Chloë has gone to AC for a Morrissey concert, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. Our favorite part of the story? When the Times reporter gripes about getting turned away from the Beatrice.

Bobby Flay a Fan of Chipotle (the Restaurant, Not Just the Sauce)?

Earlier today, we pointed to our fashion blog’s outrage that Orlando Bloom was seen with Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr at Max Brenner, of all places. However, our combing of this week’s celebrity sightings reveals it may have been a momentary lapse, since Bloom was also spotted at the much more respectable Bobo. Phew. But what’s this — Bobby Flay filming outside of Chipotle? Is he a spokesman now? Who knows — if Rachael Ray can endorse Dunkin’ Donuts…

Momofuku, Freemans, Spotted Pig Honchos Break Bread With Stephen Starr

Li Lo does Luger.Photo: WireImage

Our favorite celebrity sighting of the week was, of course, Lindsay Lohan at Peter Luger on Tuesday night — that’s because we saw her with our own eyes. Of course, we can’t be everywhere and see everyone, so as usual we’ve combed the gossip columns for other stop-ins. We’re sorry we missed Tracy Morgan at the Plumm, shirtless and offering to father babies as usual, and boy do we wish we were a fly on the wall when partners Ken Friedman and Taavo Somer, along with David Chang, dined with Stephen Starr at Buddakan. Is there a Spotted Buddafuku in the works?

Singer-Songwriter Vanessa Carlton Indeed Loves Ruby's in the Afternoon

Vanessa Carlton

"I went to Ruby’s and had another espresso."Photo:Melissa Hom

In her single “Nolita Fairytale,” Vanessa Carlton sings about her love of “Ruby's in the afternoon”— a reference to her favorite neighborhood hang. “It’s the best people-watching,” she says of Ruby’s. “Everyone looks like they’re out of an editorial shoot for some hip magazine. But it’s not posey.” Other favorites near the “Nolita flat on rent control” she famously exalts? La Esquina (“I love to get takeout or to just sit at the front taco bar”), Freemans (“I think it wins the devils-on-horseback competition with the Spotted Pig”), and N (“the best chorizo I’ve ever had”). We asked her whether this week found her at any of the above.

Beatrice Currently Closed to Everyone, Not Just You

Pissy doorman not pictured.Photo: Yun Cee Ng

Gawker reported earlier today that the Beatrice was closed last night, though “no one knew why.” Co-owner Matt Abramcyk fills us in. In order to address noise complaints, Abramcyk was doing renovations to facilitate quick entry and exit to and from the club. However, someone failed to apply for a permit to do some plumbing work. “When [the mayor’s task force] shut construction down,” Abramcyk says, “they left us with our pants half down, since we were doing it to satisfy them.” He’s working with his lawyers to get his pants back up in time to open tonight — not that it matters to the 99.9 percent of the city that can’t get in anyway.

She’s the author of the recently published Single Girl’s Survival Guide. “When you’re dating someone,” she says, “you tend to keep up with their eating habits.” (Not that she wasn’t happy, when in town from London, to keep up with her father Andrew’s dinners at the late Manhattan Ocean Club). This week, though, she struck out on her own and hit some more au courant restaurants.
